Chiltern Radio launched on October 17, 1981, as an Independent Local Radio (ILR) station serving Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, and Buckinghamshire. Broadcasting from studios in Dunstable, it utilized 97.6 FM for the northern region and 96.9 FM for the southern region. Initially, Chiltern Radio provided a mix of music, news, and local information, with the two frequencies sometimes featuring different programming during peak times. In 1999, GWR Group (later GCap Media, then Global Radio) acquired Chiltern Radio, leading to a split into Chiltern FM, a contemporary hit radio (CHR) station, and Classic Gold Digital, broadcasting on the original frequencies. In 2009, Chiltern FM was rebranded as Heart, aligning with a nationwide rollout. The Classic Gold Digital service became Gold. In 2019, Global Radio sold some of its stations, leading to the launch of Beds, Herts and Bucks Radio in 2023, broadcasting on the former Chiltern Radio frequencies and owned by Bauer Media Audio UK. Chiltern Radio actively participated in local events and supported local charities, providing a platform for presenters and journalists. Its music format evolved over time, reflecting audience preferences. While the Chiltern Radio name is no longer in use, its legacy continues.
