Choice FM began as a pirate radio station in London during the late 1980s before securing a legal license in 1990, becoming the UK's first independent black-owned radio station. Initially broadcasting only in London, Choice FM dedicated itself to urban music, filling a gap in a landscape dominated by pop and rock. Over the years, ownership shifted, with Capital Radio acquiring it in 2004, leading to a merger forming GCap Media (now Global). Choice FM was celebrated for its influential presenters and DJs, including Steve Sutherland, Jasmine Dotiwala, DJ Spoony, Ace & Vis, Tim Westwood, Abrantee Boateng, Ras Kwame and DJ 279. These personalities played a pivotal role in popularizing genres like UK garage and Afrobeats. In 2013, Global Radio rebranded Choice FM as Capital XTRA, marking the end of Choice FM's unique identity.
