📖 Free FM New York About
Free FM New York, broadcasting on 92.3 FM as WCKY-FM and later WFNY-FM, operated from 2005 to 2008. It was owned by CBS Radio, now Audacy. The station aimed to reinvent talk radio by attracting a younger audience. Free FM featured a diverse lineup of personalities, including David Lee Roth, who hosted a morning show, and Adam Carolla, who hosted the afternoon drive slot. Tom Leykis also hosted an evening show. Ron Bennington and Fez Whatley, formerly of WNEW-FM, also contributed to the station's programming, as did John and Ken, a syndicated conservative talk radio duo from Los Angeles.
Free FM faced challenges in the competitive New York City radio market. These included audience fragmentation and controversy related to some programming. Despite its innovative approach, Free FM New York was rebranded as '92.3 NOW FM' in 2008, switching to a Top 40/CHR music format. This ended the Free FM experiment.
