Radio Gambaru emerged in the immediate aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami to fill the critical information void left by damaged communication networks. The station's name, "Gambaru," embodies the Japanese spirit of perseverance. Its primary purpose was to provide vital updates on relief efforts, safety information, and missing persons for Kamaishi and surrounding areas. Beyond emergency broadcasts, Radio Gambaru aimed to reconnect a traumatized and scattered community. It provided a platform for residents to share their stories, express concerns, and offer mutual support. Programming is hyper-local, focusing on the specific needs and interests of the Kamaishi community.
