VOA Global English, a service of the Voice of America (VOA), was established in 1942 to counter propaganda during World War II and has since evolved to focus on English language education through news, features, and cultural programming. It utilizes simplified English with a controlled vocabulary of around 1,500 common words, shorter sentences, and relatively simple grammar. VOA Global English delivers content through multiple platforms including shortwave radio broadcasts to reach areas with limited internet, a comprehensive website with articles and interactive exercises, a mobile app for smartphone and tablet access, and social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. The content includes news stories covering U.S. and world events, science, technology, health, and business; features about American culture, history, and lifestyle; and educational programs specifically designed to teach grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. VOA is funded by the U.S. government and overseen by the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), ensuring adherence to journalistic standards. Its historical context began countering propaganda, and then expanded its mission to include English language teaching and cultural exchange.
