📖 WLIR-FM About
WLIR-FM, broadcasting at 92.7 MHz on Long Island, New York, revolutionized radio with its pioneering embrace of new wave and alternative music in the late 1970s. Before its transformation, WLIR, whose call sign meant "Long Island Radio", was an easy listening station struggling for listeners. In 1979, program director Denis McNamara spearheaded a format change, filling a void by championing emerging music from the UK and Europe.
WLIR's "Dare to Be Different" motto exemplified its commitment to playing unconventional music, introducing artists like The Police, Blondie, and Elvis Costello to American audiences. Key on-air personalities like Larry "The Duck" Dunn, Malibu Sue, and John "The Reverend" Dixon helped shape the station's unique sound. WLIR fostered a strong community through concerts and events, creating a space for those who felt alienated by mainstream culture.
As the 1980s progressed, WLIR faced increased competition and ownership changes. In 1996, the WLIR call letters moved to 107.1 FM, with 92.7 becoming a Spanish-language station. While 107.1 attempted to maintain the alternative format, it never replicated the original's influence. Eventually, 107.1 abandoned the alternative format too.
