WQXR, broadcasting on 105.9 FM in New York City, has been a cornerstone of classical music since its founding in 1936. Originally owned by the Interstate Broadcasting Company, a subsidiary of The New York Times, WQXR distinguished itself early on with its focus on classical music and news. The station's close association with The New York Times gave it prestige and credibility for many years. In 2009, a significant shift occurred when The New York Times sold WQXR to Univision Radio, leading to concerns about the future of its classical music format on 96.3 FM. However, New York Public Radio (NYPR), the operator of WNYC, intervened and acquired the WQXR call letters and intellectual property. As part of this agreement, Univision took over the 96.3 FM frequency, and WQXR moved to 105.9 FM, previously home to WCAA. This ensured the preservation of classical music broadcasting in New York City.
